8th Annual Statewide Summit on Mexican American Studies

Bring your voice. Share your story. Together, somos MAS.

Join scholars, activists, historians, artists, and politicos for a collective celebration of the past, present, and future of Mexican American Studies and Ethnic Studies in Texas. We will be sharing the powerful and inspiring MAS work happening across the state, as well as brainstorming and strategizing ways to continue to build and sustain the movement for MAS in Texas schools. There will be sessions related to community and parental engagement, media, politics and policy, as well as pedagogy, curriculum, and practice in elementary, secondary, and higher education spaces.

This year’s summit will include a focus on Mexican American Literature including readings and book signings by Mexican American poets and writers whose books are shaping curriculums. Additionally, teachers who attend will receive free curriculum guides, aka lesson plans, for grammar school, middle school, and high school. These have been commissioned by the Latino Bookstore at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center in San Antonio through a grant from the office of Congressman Joaquin Castro. Middle school teachers, sign up early to get invited to attend a workshop for implementing Mexican American Literature. There will also be exhibits by publishers and authors and a commemoration of the 25th anniversary of Nuestra Palabra: Latino Writers Having Their Say.

Texas teachers will receive up to 4 hours of Continuing Professional Education for participating in this Summit.
